BusinessWeek tackles the media feast surrounding reports of exploding iPhones in Europe. Apple is currently investigating several instances of reportedly overheating or exploding iPhones in France and Britain; though given the amount of attention the matter has received, one would think the number of cases was much higher than that. With only 15 heat-related complaints about iPods to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (out of over 200 million iPods sold since 2001) there's no need to start shopping for a Kevlar-lined case.

Nothing new here: Ars Technica reports on a new trojan horse, disguised as a QuickTime player update, that hijacks DNS requests, sending the victim to the attacker's Web site of choice. Common sense helps you avoid 99 percent of trojans and this case is no different - if an untrusted Web site instructs you to download and install some piece of software, don't do it.

Some MacBook Pro owners with 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drives have been complaining of clicking sounds, followed by a short period of stalled performance. The machines become responsive again after roughly 10 seconds, and do not require rebooting. Luckily, Apple spokesperson Bill Evans has informed CNET that Apple is aware of the issue and working on a fix, though no definite timetable has been set for its release.

Google Caffeine is Google's new search engine architecture. It's designed to improve search speeds and results for users, but may also have some unexpected results for developers. PC World runs down answers to basic questions concerning the forthcoming changeover.

Ars Technica reports on Apple's recent decision to revoke developer Khalid Shaikh's iPhone developer license and remove his 900+ apps from the App Store. According to Apple, Shaikh's apps, which aggregated and repackaged news content, frequently drew objections from third parties for violating intellectual property rights. When considering Apple's claim of over 65,000 apps in the App Store, hearing news of such junk (another developer reportedly has 2,000 apps similar to Shaikh's) highlights the difficulty of finding good applications.

The Loop covers Apple's small but appreciated gesture to iPhone developers: the capability to search for apps by keywords. With over 65,000 iPhone apps currently available, anything that makes it easier for apps to be found is welcome.

Macworld reports on Apple's rejection of both the Google Voice iPhone app and third party apps that interact with the telephony service. Apple cites the fact that the Google Voice app provides "duplicate features that come with the iPhone" as its basis for barring it from the App Store. Google Voice provides free SMS messaging and cheap international calling, thus arousing widespread suspicion that AT&T is behind the decision.

BetaNews analyzes a startling NPD Group research report showing that, in June 2009, Apple earned 91 percent of the market revenue for computers priced over $1,000, up significantly from 66 percent in Q1 2008. This is largely because the average Windows-based PC price is $515, whereas the average Mac price is $1,400, but all the major PC makers also produce premium PCs too, and Apple is clearly eating them for lunch.
